Moratorium Forest Rescue Indonesia?
Last year our government announced an important policy related to Indonesia's forestry sector, the policy of a moratorium (Pause) New Opening Permit Granting Forest. This policy is a good step that must be appreciated as an effort to rescue our forests, and moreover, the policy was issued amid the pressures of employers and industries that are eager to open our natural forests and for the sake of their profits.
Moratorium on granting new licenses or breaks, you could say we like fasting. Where the need to fast this time was a land-based extractive industries such as forestry industries, farming and mining, and for 2-year time span, they are not allowed to open the primary forest and peatlands under a new license. But whether that is enough? Certainly not, if we fast with hunger or thirst only for certain types of foods and beverages alone from morning till evening, without trying to fix our bad behavior, then surely it would be futile does not it?
If we want to see the problems that plagued our forests, incredible, ranging from corruption, weak law enforcement, illegal logging, forest burning, unsustainable expansion of deep peat, messy rules and bureaucracy, overlapping concessions to conflicts with indigenous peoples, scattered in various parts of our forests, and it has started almost since the country became independent.
And who were victims not only orangutans, tigers, elephants, and the wealth of our flora, the lives of people living in and around the forest but also the diverse cultures that inspired us from the danger of being lost forest, and also the wealth of existing linguistic communities living in in the forest. Though the forest as a natural wealth of this nation, should be able to provide welfare to all citizens if managed correctly.
So, if the moratorium could be the savior of our forests? Sure you can, but on condition that the moratorium policy is strengthened, properly executed, with the achievements and targets are clear, and not just restricted to postpone a new license for two years, and only in primary forests and peatlands. Without fixing the problems really are rooted in our forest management, and provides additional coverage over what dimoratorium (which should include all the natural forests and peatlands) then hope for Indonesia's forests become increasingly clear
Greenpeace along with friends from various civic organizations since last year has filed a draft plan to the government moratorium on the basis of issues that have been identified and should be a priority to be completed first in order to better preserved forests Indonesia, and to accomplish all of this is not enough just to delay the provision of The new license for 2 years.
May this, almost a year already imposed a moratorium policy, there is still a chance the future to improve the content and implementation of the moratorium before the damaged condition of Indonesia's forests. Before it's too late and only led to disaster, now it is our duty as citizens who love the forests of Indonesia to stand up and question, whether there was overall improvement efforts in the forestry sector we now?
If not, continue with the moratorium and without limiting the time but to put forward the achievement of improved forest governance, and this time please do it right.
Give time for our forests breathe for longer and give future generations the opportunity to participate enjoy it.
